Reflections - Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs, Life

I've been in Goa for a few days now. It's been home for years, although work, adventure, life and festivals have taken me across the Middle East, North and South America, Europe and South East Asia,  with my work base being Mumbai city.

Over the last few years life or destiny pushed me out of hard core operations into the world of nutrition, lifestyle health and disease.

I have to be grateful for the exposure i got and the opportunity gained,  to learn, share and conduct research with some of the finest institutions across the world.

I've though much about sending this mail out to a few of my extremely close friends, relatives and family. I wondered whether it would actually help, or if i would be perceived as someone who was just trying to change life and push opinions on others.

I finally decided that what i wanted to share was far more important than what people think of me. Along the years i lost friends who i thought were friends, no regrets, some came, some went, some stayed and some died and moved onto a better world, so i realized, what do i have to lose, and then i read that knowledge and experience shared from the heart, can only be a blessing to yourself and others.

Over the last few years i have been involved in the research and procurement of foods that cure and prevent cancer and other deadly diseases. I got exposed to people suffering and dying of diseases, especially cancer and cardiovascular complications. I worked with the families of the patient dying, i counselled successful people who had everything in the world, but were now ridden with cancer, and learnt of their misery and suffering along the way. I got exposed to how entire family lives, careers, businesses were turned upside down when cancer or a deadly disease got inflicted on someone. What followed pain and suffering was financial loss, high stress which further gave birth to sickness and depression and a change in outlook towards life.

With all the research, exposure to medical and holistic science, experience and survivors as well as stories of the dying,  the one and only sure shot, rock solid cure or possible solution, came out to be 'lifestyle'.

The other aspect of course is our destiny, but there is not much to be said about that, as it is not in our hands.

I am not here to preach about smoking, drugs, alcohol, good food, exercise, deep breathing etc.Everyone knows what they should do to stay healthy.

I wanted to share and remind you of  what may get lost  in the whirlwind of today's busy and hectic lifestyle. The whirlwind of relationships, family, work and career, social and peer pressure and financials.

The reasons why we should attempt to eat healthy food, exercise moderately, sleep well and manage stress effectively is so much more than just having a good body or looking good. It's more about the health of your cells. Trillions of cells that power your body's day to day functions. Cells that affect your brain, vital organs, emotional health and feelings, sex drive and the number of years that you may live for.

Most of the repercussions of our habits will be seen in out later years, disguised as sickness or a deadly disease and we may mistake it for old age or just ' bad luck '.

Younger body's will be able to handle the onslaught of continuous drinking or smoking, but every cell in your body has a life and it diminishes in some way or the other along the way.

The questions i get asked worldwide at forums, schools, offices and private counselling s are -

1) We know people who smoke and drink all their lives and never get sick or get cancer, can you explain that?

2) Young people who never drink or smoke die of heart attacks in their 20's, can you explain that?

I cannot provide a solid answer based on science, but an answer to question one was provided to me by a liver surgeon in Brazil.

He explained it as a ratio. You fall into a ' lucky' or ' unlucky' ratio. But, why chance it? Are our lives and those around us who love us worth the chance to see which ratio you fall in?

He explained how he performs thousands of liver transplant operations every year and how the liver of a person who drank consistently and smoked often, looked like bullet riddled, blackened, and torn pieces of toxic flesh. He also spoke about the wonders of the liver, and how when someone who drank and smoked a lot, cut down even a little bit, the liver started regenerating fresh and new healthy cells.

The answer to question number two is quite simple, one that came through a learning experience. A non smoker and a non drinker may be the perfect idol of health to everyone else and people would be shocked to hear that such a person died of a heart attack. There could be several reasons, and one of the most overlooked one is STRESS. We have no clue what kind of mental or  emotional stress that person was going through and stress is enough to cause death and deadly diseases. It is powerful enough to make a human kill or do wrong things, imagine the damage stress can do to the cells in your body.

Like i said earlier, it is not my intention to preach abstinence or compel you to give up smoking/drinking etc.

When i sit back and look, i see so many people doing the very same things that can get them into the very same situation millions and millions of people across the globe are desperately trying to get out of, that is disease and suffering.

I would love to be completely positive and i hope and pray that no one should ever have to experience disease, but then the law of the universe and several religious literature speak about ' what we reap , we sow' hence as humans we must be aware and conscious of what we do and how we do it. They speak about how we must respect the gift of life, that is our very own body.

Rather than telling someone what to do, i learnt the best way to bring about change was through reflection.

If we know that smoking and excessive drinking is a proven cause of cancer and other diseases do we respect our body and life enough to consciously reduce consumption?

If we love someone or are loved by someone, our family's friends,  etc, why would we want them to go through the pain of your suffering ?

Why would we want to become a liability to someone  or our loved ones if we contract some horrible disease?

Would we want our careers, relationships, family life etc affected because of our ill - health?

If we have large dreams, is excessive smoking or drinking going to get us there? Or will it become the deterrent.

Do you really really need friends around you who won't ridicule you should you decide to reduce consumption ? OR do you need friends who will continue to respect and love you should you decide to reduce your consumption?

Is your image in your social circle built around how much you can drink or smoke or how you behave when you are drunk, high or stoned?

Does the theme of all your meetings/outings/get together s revolve around alcohol and tobacco or is there place for intellectual talk as well?

Do you really need that last cigarette you just reached out? Really? I mean how bad is really, would it make you sad or depressed if you didn't smoke that last one, or drink that last drink?

Would it really make us lose our friends if we chose to use on weekend a month to give our body a break from alcohol or tobacco? Or would it make us go into withdrawal mode?

Even if we can cut down by one cigarette to start with or stop ourselves from having that extra drink, we can still be happy, have a good time and do some good to our body.

And in case we can't do that, i strongly suggest that if our body has to go through the onslaught of  tobacco and excessive alcohol, we at least make an attempt to eat healthy and nutritious food, exercise at least 5 out of 7 days and get sufficient sleep for the body to rejuvenate.

More than moderation, just reduce by one of whatever it is your poison is. Just one less !!

You mean a lot more than you may think to the people around who love you. Im not saying that alcohol and smoking will kill you ( ok, smoking maybe) but habit will.

It's never to late to make a change,,,just one less, is enough to begin the journey towards healthier cells and a wholesome life.

Clean Liver = Fat Loss = Great Health

Doing everything you can to lose weight, but frustrated with slow or no progress?

Before you change your food plan, exercise schedule, or blow up money on some expensive weight loss product, it may be a good idea to check how your liver is functioning.

The liver is like the best maid you have ever had, when it is functioning at top speed.
It cleans up all the toxins that we put into it, leaving no trace behind. The liver keeps all of our internal systems running smoothly. However, our modern diet, pollutants and our increasing use of personal care products containing toxins put our livers into serious overtime.
Suffice it to say that if you consume any processed foods, use conventional cleaning or personal care products, or smoke or drink excessively, you are laden with toxins and your liver is tired, very tired.

Another primary function that your liver performs is the break down of fat ( fat metabolism), but if your liver is loaded with toxins, it will put it's role of fat breakdown on the back burner and instead clean out toxins.

The cleaner your liver, the faster you break down fat. This is one of the main reasons people struggle to lose weight or burn fat.

Fortunately, nature has provided us with powerful foods that can help our liver flush out toxins and it's important that we eat these foods regularly to help with liver cleanse.

Several people choose to do a liver detox once a month, which is a great idea, but i also suggest that you eat liver cleansing food or drink liver cleansing natural juices daily to keep your organs functioning at it's best.

Age and toxins in your liver are directly connected. The more toxins you have in you, the older you look and the faster you age. Many, many diseases are caused due to the amount of toxins we have in our body. We cannot help circumstances like pollution, pesticides, certain chemicals in processed foods, but we can help reduce toxins by -

Drinking in moderation or taking a break from alcohol often

Stop smoking

Reduce the consumption of processed and packaged foods

Avoid junk food and deep fried food

Reduce medication and instead use herbal cures, or food, exercise and sleep as a natural cure

Listed below are the best foods that can cleanse the liver and boost liver function.

 - Garlic
 - Carrots
- Beets
 - Ginger
 - Green tea ( whole leaf )
 - Turmeric / Curcumin  ( taking curcumin daily cleanses your liver and boosts metabolism)
 - Avocado
 - Grapefruit
-Spinach and all green leafy veggies
 - Apple -
 - Cold pressed virgin olive oil
 - Sour lime/lemons
 - Citrus fruits ( oranges, pomegranates, sweet limes)
 - Cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli
 - Walnuts
 - Whole grains

All the foods listed above are commonly available.

The best detox juice for your liver would be made with -

apple
beet
carrot
spinach
garlic ( small piece)
ginger ( small piece)
1 tbsp flax seeds
lemon

Blend this together and you have a powerful liver cleanser.

Be kind to your liver, and you will see and feel the difference in your health almost immediately

Jaggery - Nature's Sugar

Known as ' Poor mans chocolate' in villages across India, this natural sweetener, melts in the mouth, and was traditionally used to sweeten foods and make desserts and sweets. This could explain one of the reasons why our earlier generations enjoyed sweets and desserts daily, and yet diabetes, cancer , heart and weight problems were unheard of.
Then along came commercialization, costs and the aesthetic appeal of foods, that gave rise to the humongous consumption of highly refined white sugar and along with that, a rapid increase in diabetes, weight related diseases and cancer.

Benefits of Jaggery

The process of making jaggery from the plant sources, does not involve any
chemical agents and hence all the natural mineral salts are retained in
jaggery. Jaggery is known to have various medicinal properties and other
health benefits.

Jaggery as a Cleansing Agent
Jaggery acts as a cleansing agent for our body and effectively cleans the
respiratory tracts, food pipe, lungs, stomach and intestines. It helps the
body to get rid of the unwanted particles and thus provides relief
from constipation.

Jaggery as a Digestive Aid
Jaggery proves as a great digestive aid and speeds up the process of
digestion. Eating a few grams of jaggery after a heavy meal is often
recommended for those having problems with normal digestion. In the body,
jaggery activates the various digestive enzymes and itself gets converted
to acetic acid, thus speeding up digestion.

Jaggery as a Mineral Source
Jaggery is a rich source of many vital minerals that are required by the
body for normal growth and functioning. It is considered as a store house
of various important minerals like iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium,
etc.Excellent for children when it comes to growth and nourishment.

Other Health Benefits of Jaggery

Jaggery is used since ancient times to treat problems such as
dry cough, common cold and asthma.
It is beneficial in treating conditions like indigestion and
      constipation.
Jaggery helps in promoting relaxation of muscles, nerves and blood
      vessels, thus enhancing their functions.
Migraines, the most painful and uncomfortable type of headaches can
be relieved to a large extent by jaggery.
Jaggery is a rich source of iron and is therefore, very good for
anemic people, as it increases the hemoglobin level in the blood.
Jaggery has strong antioxidant properties and protects our body cells
from the damage caused by free radicals.
Jaggery has the ability to purify blood and helps in regulating the
      liver function.
A mixture of jaggery and dry ginger powder taken with warm water can
      stop hiccups.
Jaggery helps in regulating blood pressure and also helps the body to
get rid of all the toxins.
Jaggery is loaded with many essential nutrients such as proteins,
vitamins and minerals, that play a key role in many life processes.
Jaggery has potassium content that may help in reducing bloating and
      water retention.
Consume jaggery in moderation like every other food. Use it as a substitute for sugar. You can buy organic jaggery from almost all stores and food malls, you even get it in a powdered form which makes it easy for you to add to tea or coffee or shakes.
An ideal coffee will be sweetened with jaggery and a dash of cinnamon powder to control blood
sugar levels and reduce the acidity of the coffee.

The Biggest Obstacle To Your Weight and Health

Do you eat food with worry in your mind?

Do you exercise with worry in your mind?

Do you go to bed at night, with worry in your mind?

Are you low on energy through the day and only
the thought of outside food or entertainment cheer you up?

Do you accept defeat when  -

Your weight does not budge.
You have a restless night of sleep.
You give in to food cravings.
Your friends around you seem to lose weight faster or look better than you.

A roadside advertisement for a certain brand of motor oil:
' A clean engine always delivers power '

So will a mind, free of negatives, produce positives, that is to say, a clean mind willdeliver power.
Therefore flush out your thoughts, give yourself a clean mental engine, remembering that a clean mind, can always deliver power.

Most of our obstacles to our weight loss and health are mental in character. You may say, ' mine are not mental, they are real', perhaps so, but your attitude towards them is mental.

'Worry', is the most subtle and destructive of all human diseases. Through ' worry' we have the dangerous ability to manifest diseases, stress, failure, defeat, anger, frustration and depression.

Do not accept defeat so easily. When your weight does not budge, be patient, and instead of giving up, be more consistent with the things you know you should do to lose weight. It took you months or years to pile on fat, what makes you think it will go in a few weeks without some sacrifice and effort?

Are you being honest with yourself when it comes to your food, exercise and eating outside?

Ask yourself if the defeat that you have accepted is because you keep comparing yourself or your body to those around you? Your friends? Your social circle? if yes, then you will never be happy with the progress you make, you will get further depressed and you will fail.

Have you even seen any two actors/actresses with the same body type? How can you ever have the same body as someone else then?

Comparing ourselves or our children with others is the most drastic mistake one can make when it comes to your health or weight. Your benchmark for progress should be you and what you did yesterday, compared to what you will do today and tomorrow. keep getting better, keep getting consistent, and that will get you to your goal and peace of mind.

If you struggle to sleep, filter your thoughts and your mind. easy to say, but hard to do, but you must make the effort if you want to sleep well again.
Worry stems our of insecurity, greed, fear, low confidence, guilt and other factors. Sometimes, you have to let go and if you don't, your health will make that decision for you.

One of the best exercises to combat your insecurities is to count your blessings.Take a paper and write down all the things that you have and are grateful for. This should come from your heart. When you are done with this, your problems/insecurities will suddenly seem less.

When you begin to eliminate worry, your energy levels automatically increase.

You see we have over 60000 thoughts running through our heads everyday, so it's difficult to focus on what we have ( which is usually enough) and instead our minds fill with chaos, which in turn stems worry and negativity. This causes stress and we all know by now that stress causes disease, a weak immune system, and is the biggest, i repeat , BIGGEST, obstacle to fat loss and sleep.

Don't see yoga or breathing as just an exercise. Use that one hour or 45 minutes to actually reflect, count your blessings, pray or analyze the goodness in your life.

It is being proved today that the best way to cure a disease or a pain,is not to focus on it, but focus on everything else that's going well  in your life.

To reach our goal, just have faith. All religions preach this, and most people fail to follow or believe in that.

Use a day or a weekend  in a month for you, to weed out negative thoughts, detox your mind, relax your body, count your blessings.

Worry is a down payment on a problem that may NEVER occur and worry has never been known to solve a problem.

Boost Your Immunity

With the onset of the rains and changing weather, it is common for us to
fall sick, especially children. This happens when our immune system is not
strong enough to fight of infections.

The stronger our immunity, the faster we recover when we fall sick, and we
are less susceptible to catching infections.

Even the healthiest of people fall sick, when a stray virus or germ infects
a cell, but a healthy person’s immune system will be better equipped to
quickly destroy the virus or germ, allowing for a faster recovery.

If your immune system is weak, it will take longer for you to recover and
easier for you to fall ill.

A strong immune system wards of infections and diseases. In cases of cancer, the stronger the immunity,
the better the chance to fight it, and this applies to all diseases.

So what can you do to build a strong immune system?

Your first line of defense is to choose a healthy lifestyle. Following general good-health guidelines is the single best step you can
take toward keeping your immune system strong and healthy. Every part of your body, including your immune system,
functions better when protected from environmental assaults and bolstered by healthy-living strategies such as these:

  • Don’t smoke.

  • Eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in saturated fat.
  • Exercise regularly.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • Control your blood pressure.

  • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.

  • Get adequate sleep.

  • Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly.

  • Get regular medical screening tests for people in your age group and risk category.

Exercise: ( keep your blood circulation at it’s peak) – walk, run, skip,
swim, yoga, weights, zumba, sports. It’s your choice, do something you
    like.

Sleep: 7 hours minimum. Your immune system strengthens while you sleep.
Your body needs rest to rejuvenate and repair itself, to stay strong.

Eat: Besides eating regular small meals and staying hydrated, load up on
foods rich in Vitamin C. Vitamin C is responsible for strong immunity and a
host of other functions which will require a separate mail to be written.

Here is a list of foods that can build your immunity very quickly.

Of course you have the option to pop a vitamin ( which you should only if
your doctor advises), but otherwise you should be getting your vitamin C
    from natural foods.

    Green Peppers
    Citrus Fruits
    Strawberries
    Broccoli
    Tomato
    White and sweet potato
    Spinach, cabbage and cauliflower
    Cantaloupe
    Papaya
    Mango
    Watermelon
    Sprouts
    Pineapple
    Winter squash
    Almonds
    Walnuts

    Ginger
    Mushrooms
    Chicken Noodle soup/broth

    Yogurt

Black pepper is a great immunity booster.

Curcumin had direct connections to strongly  boosting immunity in a human being

Excellent food: Hummus with vegetables and cucumber yogurt dip (served with
veggie sticks). These two preparations are immunity boosters.

Lastly the following foods, known as super foods will super charge your
    immune system in no time.

          1)      Garlic and onion
          2)      Green tea
          3)      Berries and Indian gooseberry ( amla)

          4)      Raw green peppers ( add to salads)

          5)      Curcumin and black pepper

Make sure to include these foods in your daily food plan. Not only will it
boost your immunity, but coincidentally all the foods above are great for your
hair and skin (because they are Vitamin C rich foods)

Magical Fennel Seeds ( Sauf/Variyali)

Another seed/spice that grows across India. This seed should be in everyone's kitchen cabinet.

It is an Indian custom to have a tsp of fennel/sauf/variyali after ever meal and there is a reason behind this custom.

Plentiful in phytoestrogens, Fennel is a powerful herb against stomach upsets, colic, irritable bowel syndrome,
and other stomach disorders.

More importantly fennel seeds can also be used in normalizing the functionalities of the kidneys,
spleen, liver, lungs, and aiding the digestive process. Fennel health benefits also reach out in promoting menstruation,
controlling cardiac problems, treating bronchial asthma, curing heartburn, easing water retention, lowering hypertension, and soothing chest pain due to cough.

The health benefits of fennel are also seen as a mild appetite suppressant and effective form of remedy for respiratory congestion and cough.
Fennel benefits can also be seen in cancer patients, especially after radiation or chemotherapy treatments to help soothe the digestive system.

Lung Health:
chewing fennel seed may help to reduce the symptoms of asthma, clear sinuses, and stabilize breathing.
More research is needed to confirm the connection between fennel and healthy breathing.

Iron Rich:
100 grams of fennel seeds provide 100% of the DV of iron. Iron is essential for muscle function,
brain function and the formation of hemoglobin. Iron deficiency can lead to severe body fatigue and conditions such as anemia.

Calcium Rich:
100 grams of fennel seeds provide 120% of the DV of calcium.
Calcium is essential to maintaining healthy teeth and bones and may also provide cardiovascular support.

Digestion:
Maintaining the recommended DV of fiber can help prevent constipation,
cleanse the body's digestive system, and aid the stomach in the formation of bile
and other digestive juices. Chewing fennel seeds after meals is believed to be a great way to aid in digestion.

Fiber Rich:
Just 100 grams of fennel seeds provides over 150% the DV of dietary fiber.
Fiber helps balance the metabolism, fat loss,  aids in digestion and cleanses the colon

Anti- Inflammatory:

Some studies suggest that the antioxidants in fennel seeds have anti-inflammatory properties.
They may be an effective treatment for arthritis and Crohn's disease, however more research is still needed to confirm these reports.

Antioxidant Rich:
Fennel seeds are high in the antioxidant group known as flavonoids.
Studies have found that flavonoids are effective combatants of free radical damage
to cells in the body, a known cause of many different types of cancer. Flavonoids can also help
reduce oxidative stress to the cardiovascular system and protect from neurological disease.

Cancer Prevention:
The antioxidants in fennel seeds can help reduce cancer risk associated with free radical damage
to cells and DNA. They also work alongside fiber to cleanse the colon and protect from colorectal cancer.

Controls Cravings:
When you have a tsp of fennel immediately after a meal, it cuts down or completely eliminates
sweet cravings, boosts digestive juices for a healthy and quick breakdown of food,
which in turn prevents fat formation. It can reduce flatulence and indigestion and it naturally freshens the mouth.

Keep air tight containers full of these precious seeds at your workplace, dining table,
hall tables, bedside tables,,,somewhere where you can see it and remember to have it post a meal/snack.

Vegetarians and Protein

There is a common belief that a vegetarian diet lacks protein. This is not true. A plant and lentil based diet can give you protein and amino acids that your body requires for growth, body repair, healthy skin, hair and great health.

Of course, this depends on your goal. If you are an elite athlete or training to be one, or if you are pregnant, additional sources of protein will be necessary, but if you exercise moderately and not involved in any professional training, you will find it easy to get sufficient protein from sources other than meat and dairy.

Media and magazines are the chief sources responsible for creating this myth. Every year, the food industry and ‘meat and supplement’ giants invest billions of dollars into advertising their products and claims behind them in regards to the benefits of protein and meats. No doubt, meats are a great source of protein, and if it’s not a lean cut, it is also rich in heart damaging saturated fats.

Besides an egg, another source of complete protein is the combination of brown rice and beans ( rajma/kidney/peas/black beans, garbanzo).

Protein is made up on different amino acids found in different foods and they combine to make a complete protein.

If you aim for a balanced diet, you can draw up a pretty simple plant based food plan enriched with protein. I am listing some foods that have high amounts of protein. Plan these into your food plan and you will be getting sufficient protein.

It’s ok to take a good protein shake if you find it difficult to get a balanced diet die to travel/work, etc. Aim for plain whey rather than the fancy powders that claim to promote a whole load of other health and muscle benefits.

Every meal or snack that you eat should be combined with some amount of protein.

IMPORTANT:  If you consume excess protein, and your body does not need it, it will store to fat. Statistics show that America consumes more protein than their bodies require. Don’t just consume a shake because you started lifting weights. You should take professional help and advice on the same. Excess protein can damage your kidneys as well.

Have a look at these foods. It requires a small lifestyle change, like moving from white to brown rice/breads, adding more whole grains, nuts, lentils, and beans to your diet.

Vegetarians who go on fad diets can suffer from protein deficiency if they do not supplement it correctly.

Protein rich foods:

Whole grains – Brown rice, barley, whole wheat, jowar, cous cous, quinoa. ( Quinoa had the highest source of complete protein and amino acids)

Beans, lentils and legumes – Yes our Indian Dahl is rich in protein. Hummus is a protein rich preparation, an excellent weight loss food and does wonders for the hair and skin.

Tofu and soy products

Nuts and nut butters including dates and dry fruits

Seeds – Pumpkin, sesame, flax, fennel, sunflower, chia

Tempeh and seitan preparations

Pure whey protein powder

Sattu ( roasted besan/chickpea flour)

You can work with these foods to ensure you have sufficient protein.

The international standard of calculating protein for your body is 0.35 – 0.5 grams of protein to every kilo of your body weight. This again depends on your goal and kind of training.

Soya
Soya Milk
Nuts
Pulses
Oats
Wheat
Wheat Flour
Bajra
Jowar
Red and green bengal gram
Paneer
Milk
Cheese
Yoghurt
Peanuts
Brown Rice
Brown bread / rotis
Broccoli
Vegetables and fruits
Mushrooms
Green leafy vegetables

You don't need animal protein if you balance your food plan with the foods above.
