The Health Of Your Children - Do We Blame Schools ?

Last week I chose not to send my daughter to play school. No, she was not sick, nor did we have to travel, nor did we have any other commitments. I just kept her at home where I felt it was safer for her considering it would be the third birthday party celebration that week in school, which she would be exposed to.

That’s 3 days of chips and cake. Even though she’s not supposed to eat any of that and she’s doesn't’t, I am pretty tired of the fact that I have to lie and fill up a form in her school which states that she cannot eat anything with sugar or anything that’s processed to protect her.

She’s been managing quite well with her home packed lunch which she enjoys while the celebration goes on. But, she’s growing up now, she’s asking for junk and chocolates, and I expect it, and it’s difficult for a child to be exposed to so many birthday parties and junk food in a week and not feel that way. I am all for moderation, but how do we control moderation with so many celebrations that happen in and out of schools and amongst families every week and sometimes everyday.

The problem is not just sugar and junk anymore. Sugar and processed foods have always existed. We grew up eating white bread, using white sugar in tea, our mums baked for us using white flour and white sugar and we were fine. The problem today is the ‘ total consumption’ of sugar and junk. With so many parties and celebrations, the ‘ total consumption’ of the child increases and that’s where all the problems begin. A slice of cake, a little bit of sugar, pizza or some outside food once in a way really wont create a problem to a child’s health. Over consumption is the problem. And over consumption happens because of the lifestyle we choose to live for our kids and us.

Sugar is a killer. It disrupts the growth of your child, physically and mentally. It weakens immunity, it weakens brain cells, every time you mindlessly let your children eat sugar you are feeding a possible disease, you are the cause of promoting possible disease and suffering for your child, you are compromising your child’s immunity and are probably responsible for a disease or suffering they may have to endure in the future.

I no longer look at sugar in a way that it just makes people and kids put on weight. It’s far worse than that. Too much sugar compromises the immune system, making children and adults susceptible to almost any disease including cancer.

A normal size can of soda, diet or not reduces the efficiency of the immune system to almost 50%, for 4-8 hours, anything can happen in that time frame, From contracting a virus, germ or bacteria to the possible mutation of a cell.
It’s ironic. Parents put their children in the best of schools and feed them the worst of foods. It’s like buying a luxury car and putting sub standard fuel in it and expecting it to run efficiently.

We strive to do and get the best for our children, but the best is not good enough or useful if we fail to feed them food and a lifestyle that will promote good health.

We are handling and facing enough of disease today and we fail to try and plug the gap from where it all begins. And where it begins is where we live and the kind of food we feed our kids and the kind of lifestyle we adopt for them, we are responsible. Our children will form the next generation, it can be a healthy one for them or one filled with more problems and suffering. Each of us plays a role in making that happen.

Who do we blame?  I’ve had enough of parents complain about schools and how the government should have healthy options available etc. yes maybe BUT
We need to blame ourselves. Parents are to blame. Period. When I speak to school owners and principles, its very clear that they are all for health for children, but it’s certain ‘ influential and powerful ‘ parents who throw their’ weight’ around with school boards, interfering with decisions which involve health and food rules in schools.

There are so many parents I know who strive to pack healthy lunches for their kids every single day, and they have the same complain. Most of the other kids come with junk in their lunch boxes and it becomes so difficult to address that problem when their child wants to know why they cant eat what others are eating which is usually and mostly junk.

Why i say parents are to blame is because the solution is so simple. If every parent in every group decided together to send healthy food with their kids to school, guess what, the problem disappears. It’s as simple as a decision.
Then your kids see other kids eating healthy and the complains stop and its a fact with children, it will get better, they will understand and learn to enjoy this new way of eating.

You have to come to terms to believing the fact that children throw tantrums for more sugary foods and drinks, not because they are badly behaved, but its because they are addicted and they want and need it. It’s the addiction driving them to behave that way for processed and junk foods. As adults most of us cannot control sugar cravings and the want for more and more sugar. We struggle to give it up, because we are addicted. Yes, us adults struggle with that even though we have all our motor and sensory skills developed, now imagine a kid, in the process of growth, in the process of having those skills developed, they struggle with the addiction from the time they consume sugar and it only gets worse with the more they consume.

Parents: The reason sugar makes your kids happy and smile is because it creates a sudden spike in blood sugar levels and ‘ serotonin’ that gives them a sudden feeling of happiness, and then that changes to frustration and cravings when that ‘ temporary ‘ feel comes down, and then they want more, they express this thru tantrums and then the easiest way out of that is to give In to them. A viscous cycle that’s destroying health every time the cycle begins.

It’s exactly the same way drugs and alcohol works on the adult mind and brain. Yes the comparison of sugar to cocaine and heroin you see floating around on social media is true. The brain mapping of a child who over consumes sugar is exactly the same as the brain mapping of a brain consuming cocaine and heroin.

Childhood diabetes is on the rise today.

Young girls are reaching puberty way before time and why is this not a good thing? I’m sure you’ll figure.

Attention spans of children are decreasing and there is more and more hyperactive behaviour.

Children are gaining weight and then they reach an age where ‘ looks’ become important and they slip into depression as their self confidence and feeling of self worth’ decreases as they struggle to lose weight and accept their body’s. Its called ‘ body image’ something that adults go thru and now even children a severe psychological problem.

Children need to be happy and lively but you look around today and kids as young as 13 – 18 are suffering from health, physical and mental problems and its getting worse instead of getting better.

Class after class, activity after activity, yes we want the best for our children, but really, what is the best? Is the ‘ best’ sub consciously based on socio physiological pressure? Is it based on what ‘ other parents’ are doing for their kids, the kind of schools and universities they are putting their kids in,,,really what is the true intention behind every decision you make..

Where and how will a child find time to have a healthy meal and snack when their days are filled up sometimes more than us? Then junk foods become the easiest things and ways to fill the gaps in their already packed day. I will tell you that all their extra curricular classes are useless if they lose their health and burn out. They don’t have enough recovery and rest and by now we all know that a child grows physically and mentally when they sleep and rest and then you have parents wondering why their kids are still short and not growing tall.

I have conducted over 20 ‘ Nutrition Detective’ programs for children across India and in all my sessions when kids have a chance to ‘ open up’ and talk, most of them are tired and fed up of doing so much, and it clearly comes out that its what their parents want and not them. Yes as parents we have more experience to make informed decisions for the kids, but there’s a limit.

Are parties for young children really about the child or is it about the parents, how they out do or beat one and other in terms of ‘ fanciness’, ‘ return gifts ‘ , ‘ ‘foods’ etc.

I don’t mean to ridicule any parent, but i am asking you to think. Who is it about? Really does your child want all of that or does he or she need all of that?  I may be old school but the books and journals still all state that the most a child wants is time and joy and meaningful relationships with family and friends. I don’t see how chips and cakes and junk can provide what the above can.

Children need time. They are the happiest then. If we believe that food provides happiness something’s seriously wrong. If we believe that fancier the party the more the child will enjoy, we are so wrong.

I encourage all parents, everyone to start pushing for healthy food as a way of life for your kids. Again am not saying be extreme and cut it all out, remember, over consumption will happen beyond your control with just the happening of life today, so moderation is key.

If every parent for a week agrees to start sending healthy food to school, the ‘ culture’ will change and we get healthier as a society, and eventually a nation.
Celebrate ‘ healthy birthdays’. There are enough of people making and baking really good and healthy cakes and chocolates and snacks etc. Just because you may not like it, doesn't’t mean the kids won’t. Give it a chance and it may just work, but it involves team work, commitment, patience and the good intentions from every parent to make this work.

Remember there is no joy or sense in being rich, smart or successful and accomplished if you don’t have your health. Invest in the right things, that’s health, lay the foundation of good health and then chase your dreams for you and for your children.

As part of the ' Get Healthy India ' drive ( #gethealthyindia) I am volunteering an hour or two of my time twice a month to any school or learning unit across the country to educate and teach parents and teachers on the subject of nutrition, health and lifestyle and answer any questions they may have. This will be free, although transport will have to be arranged. Feel free to get in touch. ( subject to my travel and availability in India)

Size Zero - Why everyone should watch this movie

Finally a movie that sends out a powerful message to India and hopefully soon, the world.

When I got to know about a Telugu movie called ‘ Size Zero ‘, it stirred an instant interest in me. The very name of the movie ‘ size zero’ took me down memory lane, through the last 8-10 years of my career as a holistic nutritionist and practitioner in the field of lifestyle medicine.

And so I got down to watching this movie to see if the message was one that could inspire people and viewers or was It just another movie with a message and show that would further depress already depressed people, when it comes to their weight, figures, physiques and health. Would it be a message that encourages young girls to behave ‘ possessed’ by their weight and health and the whole ‘ size zero’ crap, or to accept themselves the way they in a true and loving sense.

I’ll be honest. The thought of watching the whole movie was daunting. I’ve never really watched a Hindi movie till date (some mental block for reasons I am  still to find), so a Telugu movie? But yes, like I said the name of the movie motivated me to find out just what this story was all about.
I was impressed. This is a movie that every woman and person out there including teenagers, need to watch. Finally a movie that sends such a beautiful message about health, the body, feelings and emotions, acceptance and the fact that life is larger and more beautiful than just chasing the ‘ size zero ‘ craze.

Over the years I’ve had moms and dads come to me with their daughters who were in the age groups of 16  - 19 with desperate pleas to ‘ get them thinner’, and when I asked why such a goal, the answer was always the same.’ We need to get them married ‘.

Now I’ve practiced for a lot of my career across the US and Europe and I really never got such a goal with such a bizarre reason behind it. But these mums and dads were serious and out of curiosity I asked why such a goal, it’s not like their daughters were obese, they were regular normal pretty girls. The answer was’ they need to be thin or it will be difficult to find a man to marry them’. …Seriously? And over my years in India, I found that the Indian woman strives, loses their minds and health over trying to get thin for a man, and Indian men? I fail to see even a little bit of effort (I am not generalising Indian men and women, this is my observation for a large number), so you have this thin Indian girl or woman with an unhealthy looking man with a huge pot belly, and really?

Indian men expect their women or brides to be thin? And mind you this runs across even the most affluent and educated families across the country. So basically, a woman is accepted mainly because of her figure and everything else is secondary, things like who she really is, what she wants to be, what makes her comfortable, her feelings, her emotions… and just imagine if a girl cannot have that ‘ size zero ‘ figure because of reasons beyond her control, that means she will be rejected? What an awful feeling, to be rejected because you could not have the right figure, and while parents and people around will tell them, ‘ its part of growing up, it will make you stronger’ the girl gets further depressed, eaten away inside, stronger yes, probably in a more rebellious way.

I cannot stress on the number of depressed young girls, young married woman, women with kids, who come to me with health problems ranging from PCOD, diabetes, skin and hair issued, to cancer, emotionally stressed beyond imagination. Most of this stress stems from them trying and having or wanting to be like someone that the media projects as sexy, beautiful, hot or luscious. Society has become the biggest promoter of a ‘ false ‘ and ‘ fake ‘ way of living, health and defines the’ human body’ and ‘ looks’ in such a false way.

People have forgotten how to accept themselves, love who they truly are, in their own skin. They have forgotten how to respect themselves. The benchmark for progress is never themselves, but some one they saw at a party, or in a movie, or in their own friends circle, and most of them want to be someone and look like someone other then who they truly are. So the latest exercise or diet program in the market will be the one that some movie star or model had adopted, and the country blindly follows that thinking if they do the same, they will look like that star.

I love the message that this movie projects. Slim doesn’t have to mean beautiful. You can have fat too, and be beautiful, we all know deep inside of us that beauty lies in the heart and is projected in our outward appearance. You can have a super slim woman who looks stunning on the outside but on the inside, you have a insecure, lost, depressed heart, always working so hard to maintain that figure, because she believes that it’s her figure and the way she dresses that earns her respect and love. And I can promise you, there are so many lost girls and women and men out there who have such poor body images of themselves that they can never ever be happy, as long as they continue trying to be and look like someone that they are not.

I love the fact that the movie brings out an image that there are no short cuts to health, fitness and weight loss. Recently at the launch of my book with Shilpa Shetty, The Great Indian Diet, which is now a number 2 bestseller across charts in India, Mr. Amitabh Bachan, Varun Dhavan , Anil kapoor, Manish Paul all agreed that there is no short cut to health and fitness or a good or great body. It takes discipline, knowledge, and simplicity to get what you want. If there is ever a pill that you come across that promises to burn fat or help you lose weight, you need to be so carful and wary of it, because weight loss can never be achieved thru a pill. That pill will destroy your health and the health of your vital organs in the long run. Weight loss is multi factorial and hence needs a multi factorial approach. Most of it required a strong mind and goal and then a balanced approach to exercise, nutrition, sleep and managing stress. That’s how you achieve weight loss and a fab body. Mind – Body connection.

2 days ago Shilpa Shetty and I were in Goa to address the Asian YPO summit and Shilpa got asked a question about her hour glass figure and if that’s the message she is trying to send out to women, that they should all have a figure like that. He answer was simple, she was blessed to be born with that figure, but over time she realised that women don’t just want to be accepted and loved for just their figure, for something just physical and what makes her feel complete is the fact that she enjoys eating well, exercising, being a business woman, being a hands on mum. She loves the person she is and that’s the most important part of life, health and living.

When I consult with women across India, its unbelievable the amount of time they spend on their body and health. Working out twice a day, crazy diets that rob their day of time, as they need to keep eating every 2 hours, their daily to do list had so much to do with their goal of achieving some perfect body or seeking that ‘ number’ that they want their weighing scale to show them. All this leads to depression, character change, change in behaviour, loss in self-confidence and self-esteem. Some women and men tell me ‘ when I achieve a body like ‘ that’ il be happy’ ..Sadly that will never happen, because the human mind always wants more and more and when they achieve that body, someone with a better body will come along and then again, they slip back into constant struggle, want and depression.

I must congratulate the writer, director and the entire team of the movie. I totally believe that real impact messages like these, can reach the masses thru movies and books, and that’s what India needs right now…we need to break out of this trap that the media, movies, songs, social media and magazines have entrapped humans in. Again, I repeat most issues today stem out of insecurity, fear, the want to be someone else, the want to be better than others,  the want to be accepted and loved at any cost and on grounds that are more material than heartfelt.

If you get accepted and loved because of your body only or if that plays the major part of the decision when marrying someone, I can promise you it’s the worst decision ever, for that man and that woman, for we all know that time stops for no man or woman, and the body and looks will change no matter who you are and how much wealth you may have, but what will always remain is the heart, feeling emotions and true love, this will last a lifetime. Ever seen a truly happy man or woman? The way they smile, laugh and have fun?  It’s beautiful, despite the body they may have
You guys have brought that out beautifully, how loving and accepting yourself totally brings about self-esteem and self confidence that ultimately takes you to what u want…being yourself is the most beautiful way to be.

I truly hope this movie gets produced in all languages. Its what we need to make a healthier India and world, its what we need to empower girls, women and men to feel better about themselves, love themselves and realise that the most beautiful and good looking and sexy you is YOU.

Why Sex Is So Important For Your Health, Body, Soul And Immunity

In my endeavour to help eradicate cancer, building a strong immunity is imperative, and i'm leaving no stone unturned when it comes to exploring everything that contributes to a great immunity, our line of defence to deadly diseases.

While nourishing our body with great food, adopting healthy lifestyles like exercise and good sleep, there are many things that can nourish the soul, which also contributes to strong immunity. Sex is one of them and plays a major role in humans. It's natural and meant to happen for certain physiologies in the human body.

Many people associate a healthful lifestyle with habits that are not always the most fun… like tough workouts or skipping dessert. But this is a misconception, as many of the healthiest habits are also among the most rewarding.
Take sex. It counts as moderately intense exercise plus it boosts numerous aspects of both physical and mental health. As long as you're engaging in safe-sex practices, increasing your sexual activity is a surefire strategy to better health!

The Top 11 Health Benefits of Sex

Regular sex cannot be underestimated as a factor for reducing stress, bolstering self-esteem and fostering feelings of intimacy and bonding between partners.
But the real point of this article is the fact that a healthy sex life can provide for a longer, healthier and, most would agree, more enjoyable life. Among the many health benefits of sex are:
1. Improved Immunity
People who have sex frequently (one or two times a week) have significantly higher levels of immunoglobulin A (IgA).1 Your IgA immune system is your body's first line of defense.
Its job is to fight off invading organisms at their entry points, reducing or even eliminating the need for activation of your body's immune system. This may explain why people who have sex frequently also take fewer sick days.2
2. Heart Health
Men who made love regularly (at least twice a week) were 45 percent less likely to develop heart disease than those who did so once a month or less, according to one study.3
Sexual activity not only provides many of the same benefits to your heart as exercise but also keeps levels of estrogen and testosterone in balance, which is important for heart health.
3. Lower Blood Pressure
Sexual activity, and specifically intercourse, is linked to better stress response and lower blood pressure.4
4. It's a Form of Exercise
Sex helps to boost your heart rate, burn calories and strengthen muscles, just like exercise. In fact, research recently revealed that sex burns about 4 calories a minute for men and 3 for women, making it (at times) a 'significant' form of exercise.5 It can even help you to maintain your flexibility and balance.
5. Pain Relief
Sexual activity releases pain-reducing hormones and has been found to help reduce or block back and leg pain, as well as pain from menstrual cramps, arthritis and headaches. One study even found that sexual activity can lead to partial or complete relief of headache in some migraine and cluster-headache patients.6
6. May Help Reduce Risk of Prostate Cancer
Research has shown that men who ejaculate at least 21 times a month (during sex or masturbation) have a lower risk of prostate cancer.7 This link needs to be explored further, however, as there may have been additional factors involved in the association.
7. Improve Sleep
After sex, the relaxation-inducing hormone prolactin is released, which may help you to nod off more quickly. The "love hormone" oxytocin, released during orgasm, also promotes sleep.
8. Stress Relief
Sex triggers your body to release its natural feel-good chemicals, helping to ease stress and boost pleasure, calm and self-esteem. Research also shows that those who have sexual intercourse responded better when subjected to stressful situations like speaking in public.8
9. Boost Your Libido
The more often you have sex, the more likely you are to want to keep doing it. There's a mental connection there but also a physical one, particularly for women. More frequent sex helps to increase vaginal lubrication, blood flow and elasticity, which in turn make sexual activity more enjoyable.
10. Improved Bladder Control in Women
Intercourse helps to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, which contract during orgasm. This can help women to improve their bladder control and avoid incontinence. You can boost this benefit even more by practicing Kegel exercises during sex (a Kegel squeeze is performed by drawing your lower pelvic muscles up and holding them up high and tight, as if you're trying to stop a flow of urine).
11. Increase Intimacy and Improve Your Relationship
Sex and orgasms result in increased levels of the hormone oxytocin -- the "love" hormone -- that helps you feel bonded to your partner, and better experience empathic connections.

Excessive Abdominal / Belly Fat

Did you know that the vast majority of people in this day and age have excess abdominal fat.The first thing that most people think of is that their extra abdominal fat is simply ugly, is covering up their abs from being visible, and makes them self conscious about showing off their body.

However, what most people don't realize is that excess abdominal fat in particular, is not only ugly, but is also a dangerous risk factorto your health. Scientific research has clearly determined that although it is unhealthy in general to have excess body fat throughout your body, it is also particularly dangerous to have excess abdominal fat.
There are two types of fat that you have in your abdominal area. The first type that covers up your abs from being visible is called subcutaneous fat and lies directly beneath the skin and on top of the abdominal muscles.

The second type of fat that you have in your abdominal area is called visceral fat, and that lies deeper in the abdomen beneath your muscle and surrounding your organs. Visceral fat also plays a role in giving certain men that "beer belly" appearance where their abdomen protrudes excessively but at the same time, also feels sort of hard if you push on it.

Both subcutaneous fat and visceral fat in the abdominal area are serious health risk factors, but science has shown that having excessive visceral fat is even more dangerous than subcutaneous fat.  Both types of fat greatly increase your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, sleep apnea, various forms of cancer, and other degenerative diseases.

Excess stomach fat has also been associated in studies with higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), an indicator of inflammation within the body that can lead to heart disease and other health issues.

Part of the reason visceral fat is particularly dangerous is that studies show that it releases more inflammatory molecules into your system on a consistent basis.

One of the major reasons that some people accumulate more visceral fat than others can be from a high carbohydrate diet that leads to insulin resistance over time (years of bombarding your system with too much sugars and starches for your pancreas to properly handle the constant excess blood sugar) ... and studies show that high fructose intake particularly from high-fructose corn syrup can be a major contributor to excess visceral fat.

If you care about the quality of your life and your loved ones, reducing your abdominal fat (including reducing visceral fat) should be one of your TOP priorities! There's just no way around it. Besides, a side effect of finally getting rid of all of that excessive abdominal fat is that your stomach will flatten out, and if you lose enough stomach fat, you will be able to visibly see those attractive six pack abs that everyone wants.

So what gets rid of extra abdominal fat, including visceral fat?
Is there actually a REAL solution beyond all of the gimmicks and hype that you see in ads and on commercials for "miracle" fat loss products?
The first thing you must understand is that there is absolutely NO quick fix solution. There are no pills or supplements of any sort that will help you lose your abdominal fat faster.  Also, none of the gimmicky ab rockers, rollers, or ab belts will help get rid of abdominal fat either. You can't spot reduce your stomach fat by using any of these worthless contraptions. It simply doesn't work that way.
The only solution to consistently lose your abdominal fat and keep it off for good is to combine a sound nutritious diet full of unprocessed natural foods with a properly designed strategic exercise program that stimulates the necessary hormonal and metabolic response within your body. Both your food intake as well as your training program are important if you are to get this right.
I've actually even seen a particular study that divided thousands of participants into a diet-only group and an exercise & diet combined group. While both groups in this study made good progress, the diet-only group lost significantly LESS abdominal fat than the diet & exercise combined group.
Now the important thing to realize is that just any old exercise program will not necessarily do the trick. The majority of people that attempt getting into a good exercise routine are NOT working out effectively enough to really stimulate the loss of stubborn abdominal fat.  I see this every day at the gym.
Most people will do your typical boring ineffective cardio routines, throw in a little outdated body-part style weight training, and pump away with some crunches and side bends, and think that they are doing something useful for reducing their abdominal fat. Then they become frustrated after weeks or months of no results and wonder where they went wrong.
Well, the good news is that I've spent over a decade researching this topic, analyzing the science, and applying it "in the trenches" with myself as well as thousands of my clients from all over the world to see what works to really stimulate abdominal fat loss.
From my research, two of the most important aspects to getting rid of visceral fat are:
1. The use of high intensity forms of exercise and full-body resistance training.  Low intensity cardio exercise simply isn't as effective for removing visceral fat in particular.  High intensity exercise such as interval training, sprints (bike sprints or running sprints), AND full-body weight training are very effective at helping to improve your body's ability to manage glucose and increases insulin sensitivity, a crucial step in removing visceral fat.
These types of high intensity exercise routines are also very effective at increasing your fat-burning hormones and creating a hormonal environment conducive to burning off abdominal fat, including visceral fat.
2.  In addition, it's vitally important to get blood sugar under control to help restore insulin sensitivity through the right nutrition.  This means greatly reducing sugars and refined starches in your diet (including fully eliminating any use of harmful high fructose corn syrup!), and focusing more of your diet on healthy fats (such as avocados, nuts, seeds, coconut fat, olive oil, grass-fed butter, free-range eggs, fatty fish and fish oils, etc), as well as increasing protein and fiber intake.  The standard diet recommended by the government, which contains an unnaturally high grain intake is NOT conducive to controlling blood sugar and reducing visceral fat!
Reducing grain-based foods in your diet and getting more of your carbs from veggies and high fiber fruits such as berries can go a long way to helping to solve this problem.
